Working Moms Criticised

Renowned children’s author criticizes working mothers for hindering their children’s long-term development. According to Michael Morpungo, one in ten young people is facing mental health issues, anorexia, and sleep disorders due to mothers not spending enough time with them during the crucial early years of life.

During an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Morpungo expressed his astonishment at the fact that mothers are sending their children to school at the age of four or five. He pointed out that many European countries wait until their children are seven before sending them to school, allowing them to grow and develop within the family.

Receiving an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honour’s List for his contributions to literature, Morpungo highlighted the growing number of children who are growing up without their mothers. He noted that 50% of mothers with children under the age of five are employed outside the home, which he believes is cutting off an important aspect of their upbringing.

These claims are supported by research conducted by Professor Michael Lamb, who found that nurseries disrupt children’s happiness and well-being. The study revealed that levels of stress hormones double in the first nine days of childcare without the presence of a mother and continue to increase for five months compared to children who stay at home.
