France Surpasses Ireland as Europe’s Fertile Country with Rising Birth Rate

France has likely surpassed Ireland as Europe’s most fertile country, with French women having an average of two children each. This is higher than the average of 1.9 children for Irish women and 1.5 for the rest of Europe. It is noteworthy that France’s birth rate has been steadily increasing and is now at its highest level in 25 years.

The growth in France’s population is primarily driven by births, accounting for three-quarters of the total population growth, with the remaining quarter attributed to immigration. The population has now reached 63 million.

Interestingly, 20% of new births in France are to children of immigrants. This high fertility rate sets France apart from the overall trend in Europe, where birth rates are generally declining.

This strong birth rate is also observable in the streets of the capital, where it is common to see women pushing prams while managing multiple children.

One possible explanation for this growth in birth rate over the past 25 years is the family-friendly policies implemented by successive French governments. The state makes it easier for women to work and have children by providing support. Most women can take time off from work with minimal financial loss, and childcare is affordable and of good quality. Maternity leave is substantial, ranging from 20 weeks for the first child to 40 weeks or more for the third child. Employers are legally required to keep the mothers’ jobs open for their return.

Families with three or more children receive even more support in the form of grants, allowances, and tax breaks. The government provides monthly cheques, free public transport, and various other benefits. In a unique initiative, France offers a “bonus” of 1000 euros per month to mothers who choose to stay at home for a year to have their third child.

This comprehensive approach to supporting families in France showcases the country’s commitment to promoting population growth and emphasizing the importance of family values. By providing financial incentives for mothers to stay home with their third child, France recognizes the challenges faced by families who rely on dual incomes and goes the extra mile to offer support.
