Amber Alert

Washington Children Found Safe After Amber Alert

Remi Baugher and her 2-year-old brother, Lars, have been found safe just outside Denver. The children’s father, John Baugher, was arrested while they were traveling on a Greyhound bus in Idaho Springs, Colo.

Law enforcement officers boarded the bus after it had mechanical problems and stopped on the side of the highway, about 35 miles outside Denver. The bus was headed from Salt Lake City to Hartford, Conn., via Denver.

The FBI is working to reunite the children with their mother, and John Baugher has been charged with custodial interference for not returning the children to their mother after a visit.

John Baugher altered the children’s appearance, cutting Remi’s hair short and dressing her as a boy, and dyeing both children’s hair darker. This, along with his mental health problems, led to heightened concern for the children’s well-being.

The Amber Alert was issued on Sunday in Walla Walla, and Baugher’s van was found on Monday in northeast Washington. The father and children were spotted in Missoula, Mont., on Tuesday and at a Salt Lake City bus station on Wednesday evening.
