Multiple Births Sextuplets

4 Remaining BC Sextuplets Home And Doing Well

Since their birth in January, the details about these babies have been very secretive. There was no pre media coverage, no family website and definitely no public online registries.

The four boys and two girls arrived each weighing about 800 grams, or 1.8 pounds, and were born between 25 and 26 weeks into their mom’s pregnancy.

The mother had been at B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre for several weeks because doctors wanted to keep her stable to maximize the time the babies would stay in the womb.

During the delivery one of the babies was born naturally and the others by emergency caesarean section.

One week after the babies arrived the first baby passed away and then the second one a week after that.

The time the babies spent in the hospital was filled with legal battles with the government over blood transfusions and temporary custody.

No updates were released on the health or status of the remaining babies, so I was surprised to read yesterday that the lawyer for the couple announced that the infants were home and doing well.

Shane Brady said the infants have been at home for months.

He said their parents, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses, are happy to have them out of the hospital.

The couple is involved in a legal battle over the B.C. government’s seizure of some of the infants for blood transfusions, a medical procedure not accepted by their religion.
