Amber Alert for Newborn Baby Cancelled

The Amber Alert issued last night for an 8 day old baby in Detroit has been cancelled after the baby was found in South Carolina.

According to a Detroit police spokesperson, the baby was found today with 16-year old Maquesta Rachelle Nelson of Dallas, Texas. Spokesman James Tate said Nelson was using the alias of Jasmin while in Detroit. He said Nelson said she was 17 but is actually 16.

Nelson was apprehended in Duncan, S.C. The baby has been taken to an area hospital for observation but appears to be fine, Tate said. He said Nelson was driven to South Carolina by someone who may not have known the situation with the baby.

The baby’s 27-year-old mother went into a Detroit hospital for medical issues relating to the birth and left the baby in the care of her 24-year-old sister who lives on Lantz Street on Detroit’s east side. At some point, the sister fell asleep. When she awoke around 1 p.m. Thursday, both the baby and Nelson were gone. Police were not notified about the disappearance until around 11 p.m. Thursday.

Tate said Nelson had been staying with the family on Lantz and is not related to the child. He said she will eventually be brought back to Detroit and likely be charged.
