Breast Feeding

Facebook Is Not Breastfeeding Friendly

In case you have just created an account on facebook and are planning to start a breastfeeding group where you can share photos and experiences, think again!

Facebook has been deleting photos, that they deem obscene, from their network of moms breastfeeding their children.

Karen Speed, a 33-year-old Canadian mother who describes herself as a “lactivist,” tells The (Toronto) Star that such photos led Facebook to delete her account and a support group she had established for breastfeeding mothers.

“After reviewing your situation, we have determined you violated our Terms of Use,” a Facebook employee wrote in an Aug. 27 e-mail that Speed provided to the newspaper. “Please note, nudity, drug use, or other obscene content is not allowed on the website,” the employee wrote, adding: “We will not be able to reactivate your account for any reason.”

Facebook’s official spokeswoman Meredith Chin say that the issue is not the breastfeeding, but the nudity or exposure of the breast.

In a statement to USA Today Facebook’s P.R. department had this to say:

“Facebook does allow mothers to upload and share photos of themselves breastfeeding their babies, and those photos remain available on Facebook as long as they follow the site’s Terms of Use. Photos containing a fully exposed breast do violate those Terms and could be removed,” spokeswoman Brandee Barker says in a statement that was sent to On Deadline

I think people need to just get over the whole breastfeeding issue. Its a boob and the baby needs it for nourishment.

Pro breastfeeding moms find it useful to show other moms the positions that work for them or to just show off the beauty of a happy breastfeeding baby.
