Yesterday we had a pregnant mom who was arrested for driving drunk, now today we have a mom who was arrested for breast feeding drunk…

Allanah Earley, 36, is accused of bringing her baby to a bar where she had seven drinks. She then wandered out into the cold with the baby, and eventually brought the child to a friend’s house, where she breast-fed the 3-week-old infant while still intoxicated.

“As soon as you start nursing the child, you know everything that goes in you can be affecting the child, whether it’s an aspirin or cup of coffee,” Guilford resident Susan Welsh said.

Police said friends at the bar called police because they were worried about the intoxicated mom. When officers arrived, police said she was unable to stand upright and was near-combative with officers.

The new mom was charged with risk of injury to a minor and remains held on a $10,000 bond. Police said more arrests are possible in the investigation.

Breast Feeding and Alcohol Facts:

  • How quickly alcohol leaves the breastmilk depends on the strength of the alcohol and bodyweight. Removal of breastmilk does not speed this process (e.g. pumping and dumping). Drinking water, coffee or eating foods does not speed this process. Once the alcohol is absorbed in the system, it will remain in any breastmilk produced until it removed from the body as a whole.
  • The levels of alcohol seems to peak in the body and breastmilk between 45 and 90 minutes. Absorption will occur faster on an empty stomach and slower when consumed with food.
  • Studies indicate that mothers’ alcohol consumption negatively impacts babies’ sleep cycles and quality of sleep.
