The interesting thing I find is that Dr. Odent himself is a man. Why would his presence not hinder labor? :)
(Personally, my husband was present and my advocate for me in the hospital room my first was born at. My next two were at home, and I didn't need my husband there for the quick pushing involved.)

I think, as with all things, it's just variable on the mother and her comfort level. I'm more comfortable with no one there, but my husband doesn't make me less comfortable than a whole slew of nurses!

This is VERY interesting and it really makes intuitive sense. I have seen some men be the BEST thing a woman needs and I have also seem some be completely in the way creating a tense birthing experience. Definitely something to ponder. Cant wait to check out the video

He makes a few good points I agree. The anxiousness of others around a woman in labour can hinder her birth sure but this can also pertain to medical staff, mothers, sisters, etc.

I found both of my births to be incredible bonding experiences with my husband. I think every woman and every relationship is different but to say that fathers should be banned from a labor ward is going too far.

There is a video where he speaks about it further http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_lTXDIPQLk
