Learning Through Play This Summer

As we barrel through the Summer I have been working extra hard to keep the kids occupied. On top of daytrips to the Zoo, the pool and the park I have also been trying to keep their academic skills fresh by playing games that allow them to learn while having fun.

My youngest will be going to nursery school for a couple days a week this Fall so we are using playtime to teach him how to share a little better.

Puzzles, crafts and construction toys have been popular as they give both of my boys the chance to be creative, while allowing them to play together without fighting. And even though they are at different developmental stages, they both seem to bring something to the project that other didn’t think of.

When I had my first son we bought toys based on just his needs alone, now I look for toys that have lots of pieces, a big play area or doubled-sided play.

Fisher-Price’s Trio building blocks have been great for keeping them both occupied and creative. A favorite of grandmas when she’s over, the boys build everything from double decker cars to space stations. The set’s easy-to-click bricks and sticks make them a cinch for both boys to use. Plus, you can add pieces onto the set to further it’s playability.

Every mom will probably agree that trying to keep their kids busy, while giving them a chance to learn throughout the Summer is a challenge. Whether it’s painting a birdhouse, building a castle or visiting a zoo. We try to do something everyday that gives them a chance to learn while having fun.
