Spring Has Sprung! ~ The Importance Of Outdoor Play

After what seems like the longest Winter ever, it appears that Spring has finally arrived and my boys are excited to get out and discover! As my husband and I get our property ready for the Summer both boys are enjoying everything both the back and front yard has to offer.

We love this because the fresh air gives them energy, but also poops them out at the end of the day. Plus, they’ve forgotten about all of the toys they have outside so everything that is old is new again.

For a second year in a row the big backyard item for my youngest is the Fisher-Price Bubble Mower. I bought it for my oldest 4 years ago and it has been a hit ever since. He loves that he has a lawnmower just like daddy and could trek around the backyard ‘cutting’ it for hours. It makes the same noises, but has one perk daddy’s doesn’t have – it blows bubbles.

Kathleen Alfano, Ph.D, the Director of Child Research at Fisher-Price® notes that, “Playing outdoors is a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development.” and I agree.

My boys play differently when they’re outside and don’t stop. They’ll literally go and go until we just carry them into the house.

She also says that, “Playing actively outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills and is related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills, including those involved in sports.”

Something new we’ve seen this Spring is my oldest showing some interest in Sports.  Grandma and Grampa bought him the Fisher-Price Grow-to-pro baseball set a couple Summers ago and while he’s not ready for the automated part of the toy, he’s definitely hitting the ball off the T and running the ‘bases’ I’ve strategically placed around the yard.

Now that June is just around the corner we’re looking forward to getting out to do more stuff as a family! What do you like best about Spring?
