In the first paragraph you mention the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until 12 months, that is not correct. They say breastfeeding should continue up until AT LEAST 2 years (24 months) and beyond. Only the American professional bodies put a 12 month time limit on breastfeeding, something that needs to change because it is not consistent with the biological norms of human lactation.

I'm beginning to tire of offering support to friends & family because it seems everyone I invite to LLL, or send a good blog post about baby-led breastfeeding is onto formula within a few months. I have made myself available (Im an RN, LLL volunteer, overall compassionate & understanding person, plus I'm nursing my 14 month old) so why haven't any of them asked for help?? I have started to wonder if some women really lack support or if it is just a catch-all answer. I may seem jaded, and it's because I am.

I received formula samples direct to my door step while pregnant, did I turn to them in times of struggle? Absolutely not, because they were already in the garbage. I'm sorry but I'm having trouble accepting that formula samples influence women this much. I certainly disagree with hospitals handing them out, just as much as I disagree with direct to your door delivery (courtesy of a maternity store selling customers information). It is something that will not change. Rhode Island just recently stopped handing out formula samples BUT it took all of the states hospitals to agree (fairly easily done b/c the whole state has under 10 hospitals) since 7 years prior proposed legislation to ban formula samples was overturned by the (then) governor Mitt Romeny. He will be running for President & obviously is in the pocket of the formula companies (among others). So my point is formula is a billion dollar industry that has many players, in all kinds of high places. I'm not sure what the solution is, but it will not be easy. I honestly believe a better fight would be for fair maternity leave in America. Why do American women put up with leave measured in weeks???!!? It's ludicrous & an uprising needs to happen. Mothering is thee most important job in society, bar none.
