UPDATE: Tuesday July 8th – Police have the child’s mom in custody.  No further details have been released.

On Monday just before noon witnesses at the Columbus Circle station in New York City told police that when the doors of the subway opened, a women walked out pushing a baby in a stroller.  She then darted back onto the train and disappeared leaving the baby behind.

The child, who is thought to be about 6 or 7 months old, was found by a 52-year-old woman who stayed with her for about 20 minutes, before she called authorities.

Police believe the baby was left intentionally because no one has come forward to claim her.  They have released a photo of her in hopes that someone can identify her.  The woman who left her was riding a northbound No. 1 train.  She appeared to be in her 20s or 30s, and was wearing a yellow short-sleeve blouse.

There are no cameras on the platform, and Columbus Circle station is one of the busiest stops in the city.  Both these factors could play into why the mom chose this location to leave the child.

While many were shocked by the woman’s actions one mom, Patricia Floro, 44, expressed sympathy for her.

“She must have her reasons for doing that. I mean something else is going on, something deeper that would make her do that,” Floro told the NY Daily News.

After being checked over at the hospital, the child was handed over to the Administration for Children’s Services. If you recognize this beautiful baby please contact New York City Police.
