Volvo To Redesign Passenger Seat To Fit Baby?

Looking to switch things up, Volvo has debuted renderings of a re-designed seat configuration that puts babies in the front seat.

On July 2nd in Shanghai Volvo showed a version of the 2016 XC90 called the “Lounge Console Concept” that axed the passenger seat in favor of a storage/ottoman/television/work table.

At the same show the Swedish car brand unveiled a redesigned version of its XC90 SUV concept car called the “Excellence Child Seat Concept” with an integrated infant seat, that gives parents the back seat – and a better view of their newborn.

What is extra cool is that it looks like the infant seat will come with the car, and will rotate so you can load the baby in facing you.

“We started by asking ourselves if we could make life easier for parents and safer for their children when it comes to the child seat experience,” Tisha Johnson, Chief Designer Interiors at Volvo Cars Concept and Monitoring Centre said in press release.  “We focused on three key benefits – making it easier to get the child into and out of the child seat from an ergonomic and comfort perspective, providing the child with a safe rearward facing seating position that enables it to keep eye-contact with either the driver or the rear passenger and of course including enough storage for those vital child accessories, such as diapers, bottles, wipes, and so on.”

In North America,  all infant and child car seats must be placed in the back seat. The biggest issue about placing an infant seat in the front is active airbags.  Are they disabled on the XC90?

My second question would be what replaces the infant seat when the child gets older?  Can the Infant seat system be replaced with the aforementioned storage/ottoman/television/work table?
