I came across this line of baby furniture last year when we featured their unique, but beautiful changing unit.

Another Cardboard Cradle!

Earlier this year I was surprised to find a crib that was made of Cardboard. I was not impressed with the style or look of the crib. It appeared to just be a box with a mattress, lacking in safety features and personality.

When I saw this cradle over at Yokiddo I had a completely different feeling.

This cradle has a fun “gingerbread” like design that almost looks like wood. The cardboard could be thick enough to accommodate a infant up to the age of 4 or 5 months old.

ReturDesign, from Sweden, is a company that appreciates the environment and that is probably where the cardboard design evolved from.

This product is perfect for eco-conscious parents. After you are done having kids, you can break it down for the recycle truck to take away or pass it on to a friend to use with their baby.

The Offi Ovum Bassinet

Furniture company Offi, debuted their multifunctional bassinet at ICCF in New York this past weekend.

This bassinet is different from any others that I have ever seen and has the ability to be used in two positions.

The designer, Heidi Newell, wanted to communicate the care, joy and welcome that modern parents have for their newborns through the Ovum.

Ovum is a bassinet inspired by Shaker furniture tradition, modern design, and the needs of a new born baby and its parents. A baby never ceases to be the focus of the design, while parents are offered options for portability, and a rocking or standing base. The basket allows visibility of the baby from any angle in the room, fulfilling a need for parent’s verification that a baby is sleeping well while they work about the house. This tasteful design works in any room, has great economy for small spaces and enables parents to keep a baby nearby without disturbing their sleep.

I like the look of this bassinet and I know that if you had one, it would definitly be a conversation piece. My only concern is the babies comfort. The basket would have to be a good 3 feet in diameter for the baby to be comfortable if they decided to squirm around while they were sleeping. Dimensions are not currently available, but if it was a generous size I would be a fan.

I love the round crib idea because it allows the baby more room in all directions, so if this bassinet was wide enough your baby would benefit from the same concept and be more comfortable.

Cradle VS Playpen

You have limited space, and the crib may be too big at first for your new bundle. What do you get in the meantime? While the cradle has been rocking babies to sleep for centuries, the playpen is becoming more common because of it’s portability. It may not be possible to have both so here are some pro’s and con’s for each.

– Strong sturdy frame

Cons
– Not roomy, baby may not be able to pivot around

– Baby may only be able to use for a couple of months

– Doesn’t store easily

Laura Ashley, 269.99 cad, pretty much fully loaded, pivoting changetable, canopy, 2 speed vibration under the padding, music timer and toy bar.

Evenflo, 99.99 cad, this one is great for the park or taking on vacation. It has some storage on the side, change table, and a removable bassinet.

While there are not many negatives for each the playpen seems to have more going for it overall. Both items can cost about the same. The cradle does have some models that cost upwards of 2200.00. Which doesn’t make sense to me because your baby has limited time in a cradle. For that money you can buy the top of the line playpen, 2 if you want, a “cradle” type swing and still have money left over for the down payment on their first car! For nostalgic reason people usually pick the cradle but then end up getting a playpen to have for later.

If you are using a cradle that has been passed down through your family make sure you check and make sure that the paint is not lead based. It is harmful to everyone but babies and Pregnant women are more at risk. Please also make sure that the spindles on the sides are not spaced to far apart. The has been a lot of safety improvements made in the last few years that may not be included on older products.
