Recently we have had parents try to name their baby 4real (settled on Superman?), metallica and a couple who tagged their daughters middle name with over 25 names from boxing legends.

Today a Chinese couple, seeking a distinctive name for their child, settled on the e-mail ‘at’ symbol annoying government officials grappling with an influx of unorthodox names.

The unidentified couple were cited Thursday by a government official as an example of citizens bringing bizarre names into the Chinese language.

Written Chinese does not use an alphabet but is comprised of characters, sometimes making it difficult to develop words for new or foreign objects and ideas. As of last year, only 129 names accounted for 87 percent of all surnames in China, Li Yuming, vice director of the State Language Commission, said at a news conference.

The letters ‘a’ and ‘t’ can be pronounced in a way that sounds like the phrase “love him” in Chinese.

The father “said ‘the whole world uses it to write e-mails and, translated into Chinese, it means ‘love him,’” Li said.

Li did not say if police, who are the arbiters of names because they issue identity cards, rejected baby ‘at.

There is no shame in naming your child John, Chris, Steve or something that won’t get them made fun of everytime they have to introduce themselves to someone…

At the end of June I reported on a family that was fighting to name their baby 4real.

When Pat and Sheena Wheaton tried to register their son’s name, officials rejected it because it contains a number.

Not willing to settle with a John or James the New Zealand couple opted for their next choice – ‘Superman’.

Still unhappy about the non approval of the first name, they are considering legal action against their government’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages to get the initial decision overturned.

Even though his official name is Superman, they still call him 4real.

The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realising their baby was “for real”.

They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the registrar said a name had to be a sequence of letters, with no numbers.

The same rules are in place in most countries, including the UK.

They were told that it would be perfectly alright for them to name their son For Real, but the couple dismissed the idea, claiming it didn’t have the same ring to it.

Mrs Wheaton said: “For most of us, when we try to figure out what our names mean, we have to look it up in a babies book and there’s no direct link between the meaning and the name.

“With this name, everyone knows what it means.”

Newspaper reports of their unusual wrangle sparked a flurry of comments on the internet, many of them mocking and criticising the couple.

But with their son now two months old, Mr Wheaton remains defiant.

He said: “No matter what, it’s going to stay 4Real. I’m certainly not a quitter.

“I did go online and Google some of the stories but as tough as I am it does get to you.

“But there’s no point getting upset, it could be a ten-year-old school girl making those comments.”

We all know he is for real, he is here and breathing. There is no need to put it in his name to remind us. I think that this is now an issue of principle and press. This story has gotten so much press that I am sure that this couple felt like they needed to fight.

A New Zealand couple have been blocked by authorities in their bid to name their baby son ‘4real’.

Pat and Sheena Wheaton decided on the name after glimpsing him for the first time during a scan, reports Metro News.

But they have been told that ‘4real’ can’t go down on the birth certificate because numerals are not allowed.

Mrs Wheaton told TV One: “For most of us, when we try to figure out what our names mean, we have to look it up in a babies book and there’s no direct link between the meaning and the name.

“With this name, everyone knows what it means.”

But when the parents tried to file the name with New Zealand’s Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, they were told names beginning with a number were against the rules.

The government office has opened negotiations with the parents about the name under a policy that says all unusual names must be given case-by-case consideration.

Registrar-General Brian Clarke said in a statement: “The name has not at this stage been rejected. We are currently in discussions with the parents to clarify the situation.”

New Zealand law requires all children to be registered within two months of birth and the baby will be registered as ‘Real’ if no compromise is reached.

I think that parents forget that their child will have to live the rest of their lives with this name. While it sounds good just after giving birth, 4real may not be the best name for a child on the playground or an adult who is a bank manager…

Alec Baldwin has been banned by a court from seeing his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, after unleashing a string of insults at her on the telephone.

The actor was furious when Ireland – who lives with her mother Kim Basinger in Los Angeles – did not answer the phone when she knew he was due to call from New York

During the call, recorded on the girl’s answering machine, Baldwin, 49, ranted: “You are a rude, thoughtless little pig. You don’t have the brains or the decency as a human being. “I don’t give a damn that you’re 12 years old, or 11 years old, or that you’re a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn’t care about what you do as far as I’m concerned.

“Once again I have made an ass of myself trying to get to a phone. You have humiliated me for the last time with this phone.”

He then threatened to fly to LA “for the day, just to straighten you out on this issue”.

Baldwin, calling on April 11 at 10.30am New York time (7.30am in California), told Ireland he drops everything when it is time for his scheduled phone calls and expects her to do the same.

He was due to see Ireland yesterday and before hanging up, warned her: “You’d better be ready Friday the 20th to meet with me.”

But on Wednesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Maren Nelson heard the tape and temporarily suspended Baldwin’s visitation rights. She could make the ban permanent next month.

Baldwin, star of The Good Shepherd, and Basinger, 53, who won an Oscar for the 1997 film L.A. Confidential, divorced in 2002 and have been battling over Ireland for years.

The tape was obtained by entertainment website TMZ. The Baldwin camp claimed it was leaked by Basinger and that the actor had apologised to Ireland for his rant.

Thank you to everyone who has posted messages of suppport and understanding. Naturally, it is not best for a parent to lose their temper with their child. Everyone who knows me privately knows that I have endured a great deal over the last several years in my custody litigation. Everyone who knows me privately knows that certain people will go to any lengths to embarass me and to disrupt my relationship with my daughter.

In such public cases, your opponents attempt to take a picture of you on your worst day and insist that this is who you are as a person. Outside the doors of divorce court, I have friends, I have respect from people I work with and I have a normal relationship with my daughter. All of that is threatened whenever one enters a court room.

Although I have been told by numerous people not to worry too much, as all parents lose their patience with their kids, I am most saddened that this was released to the media because of what it does to a child. I’m sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child. I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now. You have to go through this to understand. ( Although I hope you never do.) I am sorry for what happened. But I am equally sorry that a court order was violated, which had deliberately been put under seal in this case.

Once my book is published, I’m sure more people will understand the incredible strains created by parental alienation.

In the meantime, I’m sorry to anyone who’s taken offense from this episode.

A Swedish couple is struggling to convince authorities it’s also suitable for a baby girl to be called Metallica.

Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word “metal.”

Parents must get the names of their children approved by the tax authority in Sweden, which is in charge of the population registry and issues personal identification numbers, similar to Social Security numbers in the United States and Canada.

Michael and Karolina Tomaro, the baby’s parents, have appealed the decision, saying the official handling the case also called the name “ugly.”

The couple have been supported by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.

The tax agency has no plans of letting this go. They have appealed to a higher court, making the couples plans for travel impossible.

“We’ve had to cancel trips and can’t get anywhere because we can’t get her a passport without an approved name,” Tomaro said.

Some parents choose such terrible names, I wish the government would step in more often. These poor kids go on to be made fun of for years to come because of their parents need to be different.

A Chinese woman has admitted she faked being pregnant with quintuplets to please her husband.

Qiao Yubo, 23, of Songyuan city, Jilin province, became quite a star in the Chinese media for her pregnancy.

But she was exposed as a fake when a doctor called at her home to do a check-up and she ran away, reports Xinhua News.

“The pregnant mom jumped from a window and ran away,” says Mr Li, president of Changchun Puji Hospital.

Qiao later admitted she had stuffed clothes under her dress to fake her pregnancy to please her husband, Liu Defu, who had been in a car crash.

She was originally pregnant with twins but miscarried them after falling. She didn’t tell her husband because he had his leg fractured in a car accident.

He knew she was having twins, but just assumed that there were more in there.

“Since I knew she was pregnant with multiples, I dared not touch her, even in sleep.”

Liu has now forgiven his wife: “She was taking care of me when I was injured, and she didn’t want me to get hurt again by learning about the miscarriage,” he said.

Who fakes being pregnant with quints? One maybe… but not 5. Some people are ridulous!

A Chinese couple were in such a rush to meet relatives they left their three-year-old son on a plane.

An attendant on the China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou to Dalian city found the child after landing.

She told Bandao Morning News that she spotted an unclaimed red coat on a window seat after the passengers had disembarked.

“I lifted the coat, and found a child around three-years-old sleeping underneath,” she said.

The airport immediately announced the discovery over its PA system and sent guards to ask people at checkpoints.

The couple eventually contacted the guards themselves when they overheard them ask other passengers if they had lost a child.

“We were in such a rush to meet our relatives that we didn’t realise we were going without him,” said the father.

I am always shocked at these parents who ‘forget’ they have children and the relatives obviously didn’t notice either. Our son is the first thing our relatives want to see!

A Romanian luxury car enthusiast has named his daughter SLK after the Mercedes model.

The man, from Chisinau Cris in Arad county, reportedly surprised staff at the register’s office with the name.

Ica Mladin, the head of the local register’s office, said: “This man walked into the office and said he wanted a birth certificate on the name SLK Caldarar.

“We found that very odd and tried to make him change his mind.”

But the father insisted, saying he loves cars and if the baby had been a boy he would have been named BMW.

Mr Caldarar said: “The SLK is one of the most famous models of the Mercedes class; it’s expensive and beautiful.

“It I had had a boy, I would have named him BMW because this car’s hot and runs very fast.”

This man obviously has an issue with status. Why doesn’t he just tattoo his annual income on her arm?

You have children so that you can teach them all the great things about the world, not so that they can extend your ego.

Kids have enough things to deal with in life. Giving them a crappy name just makes things worse right from the get go.

A mom in Pueblo Colorado is accused of trading her 5 month old little boy for a down payment on an 2000 Dodge Intrepid and cash.

The asking price for the baby was initially $10,000, but that later dropped, Pueblo police Sgt. Brett Wilson said quoting an affidavit. Negotiations were still under way and it was unclear whether future payments on the 2000 car, for the mother, were part of the deal.

All were arrested on suspicion of felony trafficking in children and were being held at the Pueblo jail under $50,000 bail each.

The baby was placed in a foster home, Wilson said. Wilson said he couldn’t speculate on the motives for the alleged deal.

The police found the baby and arrested his mother within hours of getting a tip on Monday.

Some people are so UNBELIEVABLE! All over the world, there parents sitting beside their children in hospital beds praying for them to get better, while this idiot trades her healthy little boy for a CAR???

She needs jail time and a judge to guarentee that this baby will never come in contact with her again.

I understand that parents want their children to experience everything that life has to offer, but this dad really should have called gramma and grampa to help during this trip.

A family-of-four – including a 14-month-old baby – had to be rescued in the dark up England’s highest mountain.

The “insane” expedition ended when rescuers finally found the family around midnight up Scafell Pike, Cumbria.

David Naylor had strapped his baby son to his back for the climb with wife Sally and elder son Calum, five, reports the Mirror.

They set out at midday and reached the 3,210ft peak four hours later. But got lost in the dark on the descent.

Other climbers raised the alarm and 33 rescuers began a search. The Naylors were found around midnight on Piers Gill ravine with 200ft drops.

The family were “cold and frightened” – but the baby had slept through most of the ordeal.

Exhausted Calum had to be carried down to a hotel on a stretcher.

Teacher Mr Naylor, of Lynstone, Cornwall – on a half-term break in the Lake District with his family – said: “We are upset but very grateful.”

Climber George Wilson, 38, said: “It is insane to take small children up Scafell.”
