The baby’s chances of survival are still being assessed, but it is definitely a good sign that she is already breathing independently.

Borselia surprised doctors at Trujillo, Peru when she was born weighing just 450gms (less than a pound).

Charlie Sheen and wife Brooke Mueller Sheen speak to Entertainment Tonite in a new interview airing tonight.

The Sheens open up to ET about the birth of their twin sons, Bob and Max, born 7 weeks premature.

“It was scary,” Brooke says. “I went to the NICU to see them and words can’t express how amazing and shocking to see two human beings that came out of me. But I was scared. Our babies had so many tubes on them, it was frightening. I didn’t have the easiest pregnancy. I had preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and cholestasis.” Charlie adds, “She would have been in serious jeopardy had they stayed in longer.”

Charlie also sets the record straight on the reported heart problem Max suffers from,

“They were 7 weeks early so things were still developing. Max has something called ejection fracture. It’s the volume at which the heart pumps and how much blood the heart can pump. There wasn’t anything that any other premature child, especially a twin, doesn’t normally go through. Things are gradually going toward normal.” Charlie goes on to explain the condition that kept baby Max in the NICU longer than brother Bob, “The reason he had to stay longer in the hospital than Bob was a weight issue.”

Today the Sheens say the twins are “doing great.”

“They are completely Sheens,” Brooke jokes. “They don’t have any Mueller genes. I’m like, ‘Can I at least have an ear?!’ Bob looks identical to Charlie. Everybody at the NICU called him Charlie. And Max looks like (Charlie’s dad) Martin.”

Charlie says that his two daughters, Sam and Lola, love to hold their baby brothers.

“I think they think they might be dolls,” Brooke says. Charlie jokes that he has a different issue when his older daughter, Cassandra, 24, visits. “With her it’s more like, ‘Don’t get any ideas!’ At 43, I’m not ready for that label (of Grandpa).”

The toxic ‘Comfort Pure’ was poured into the newborn boy’s stomach via a feeding tube in a mix-up after his mum brought in the liquid to add to his blankets.

Staff only realized the mistake after he frothed at the mouth and started vomiting.

Fabric softener contains chemicals called surfactants that can be fatal to humans.

The hospital is blaming the mother of the preemie, named only as Baby Hunter, for bringing in the Comfort in a baby’s bottle.

But yesterday a furious nurse said colleagues should have double-checked before using it.

A source within the unit said:

“It was stupid of the parent to bring in fabric softener in a baby’s bottle to give to nurses.

“But this is a worried mother who wanted to make sure her baby had soft blankets.

“For a nurse to pick up an unlabelled bottle and not check it is also negligent.

“Fabric softener doesn’t even look like milk. It’s pearly and gloopy and has a strong perfume.

Everything about this is ridiculous. Let’s hope the baby doesn’t have any long term issues from this…

During her 26th week of pregnancy Cassandra Plaur was admitted to Coral Springs Medical Center where tests revealed that the placenta was not getting enough blood. She was then transferred to the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital where they delivered her baby via C-section.

Being born so early wasn’t Haley Lynn’s biggest problem. It was her weight, or lack thereof, that was evident in snapshots taken at birth. The pictures showed the most signs of danger for Haley Lynn, who weighed less than a pound.

“She was a baby that for a lot of reasons wasn’t growing very well inside the mother,” said Eduardo Otero, M.D., medical director for the Hospital.

Doctors say she weighed half as much as other babies born at 26 weeks.

Hailey Lynn spent three months under the constant care of nurses, doctors, and of course her parents, while inside incubators in the neonatal unit of the Children’s Hospital.Amazingly, at almost 4lbs and she is now home with her parents breathing on her own.

She is definitely a trooper that beat the odds!

Research has found that pillows and wedges designed to prevent or treat "flat head syndrome" in infants don't appear to do much good.

Not long after the ‘back to sleep’ campaign was launched, parents started to find that their children had developed flat heads (deformational plagiocephaly). Some so severe that helmets needed to be worn for up to 18 hours a day in order to reshape the head.

From this the sleep wedge or positioning pillow was created.

A new study to be published in the March issue of the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery found that pillows and wedges designed to prevent or treat “flat head syndrome” in infants don’t appear to do much good.

In an analysis of risk factors for deformational plagiocephaly on severity of flattening, these orthotic devices had no effect on infants with the condition, Albert Oh, M.D., of Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Brown University, and colleagues reported.

Although several have received FDA approval, that only indicates that they’re safe, the researchers noted. None of the orthotic devices has demonstrated the same effect in randomized controlled trials.

The research team found that Infant Flat Head Syndrome can occur even when a baby sleeps on their tummy, so other forces must be contributing.
Several studies have identified risk factors including:

in utero flattening exacerbated at birth

supine sleep position

firstborn status

multiple gestation

male sex

prematurity

developmental delay

poor head mobility

There have been no studies conducted to evaluate how each factor influences the severity of flattening.

I guess it’s safe to say that my firstborn male who was born prematurely with developmental delays has an unusual head shape for a reason…

I became pregnant with identical twin boys in January of 2008.

At 23 weeks and 2 days my water broke and though the doctors held off contractions just long enough to get the steroid shots in me. Drayton and his identical twin Phoenix, were delivered by C-section at 23 weeks 3 days (Friday, June 27th).

At birth, Drayton weighed 420 grams (15 ounces) and was 11 inches long. Phoenix weighed 550 grams (1 pound 3 ounces) and was 12 inches long. After three days of life Phoenix developed a large pulmonary hemorrhage and died. We all miss Phoenix very much and feel very fortunate to have had the time with him that we did have.

During his NICU stay, Drayton was intubated and on a ventilator for 7 weeks, on CPAP for 5 weeks, and on a nasal cannula (low Flow) until a week before he came home – surprisingly without having to be on oxygen.

He was in the NICU for a total of 5 months and 5 days.

During that time he had his PDA ligated when he was a month old, laser surgery for his retinopathy of prematurity, surgery for bilateral inguinal hernias, a LADD procedure for a lower intestinal malrotation (along with an appendectomy), and a broviac put in for a central line. A G-tube was surgically put in in order to help with his feedings (his lung reserve was lacking so he was struggling to take all of his feedings by mouth).

Currently his lungs are doing well but even though he requires some inhaled medications and diuretics. He has some GERD and is on two reflux medications, but that is it.

We are amazed at how well he has done after he was initially only given a 3% chance of survival (and that was with having multiple severe lifelong disabilities). So far, he has developed well and has managed to dodge any brain hemorrhages, Necrotizing Endocolitis, blindness, cerebral palsy and mental retardation.

Our Miracle baby is now seven months old and he weighs 11 pounds 13.5 ounces!

We pray that Drayton will continue to grow stronger and healthier every day.

The tiny 26 week old baby is the only living reminder that Mahound has of his late wife Jayne.

The mom-to-be passed away suddenly last Wednesday after suddenly collapsing in her bedroom complaining of a headache.

She was flown by air ambulance to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but hours later, in the early evening, was declared brain dead.

Doctors told devastated Mr Soliman that an aggressive tumour had rapidly developed in her brain in just a few weeks – and had suddenly ruptured a major blood vessel.

But although she had suffered brain death, her heart could still be kept pumping on a life-support machine, and the doctors were hopeful her daughter could be born.

A mother’s body remains the best incubator for a baby, even if she is brain-dead, but it is still wise for birth to be carried out as soon as the fetus is considered viable because infections can develop and spread to the baby.

Ava Jayne arrived by caesarean section at 26 weeks weighing just 2lb 11/2oz. Even though she is so tiny she’s doing well. Just after delivery, she was kicking and wriggling.

Babies born at this gestation have an over 70% chance of survival. I hope for this daddy’s sake this baby thrives in the NICU and he is able to bring her home.

It is sad that he has had the best and the worst day of his life within such a short space of time.

A family is dealing with the loss of their premature baby again, after thieves broke into their home and stole the cremated remains of a child they lost 7 years ago.

Most likely mistaking the box for an item containing jewelry or something of cash value, heartless thieves took the remains of Susan Onyeobia’s infant who died shortly after her premature birth. Seven years ago, the premature birth of the little girl was followed by her cremation and her remains have been their only sacred link to the child. The family was not home at the time of the burglary but it has left them with more than a sense of personal violation as they must now deal with the loss of their child again, just in a different way.

Despite objections from the police who have no clues in the case, Susan has offered a “no questions asked” return of her daughter’s remains. She still has faith in mankind and believes the world still has “good” people in it.

Until then, Susan and her husband will try to remain strong for their other children, with whom they are sharing their bed because they no longer feel safe.

I hope that these thieves do the right thing and send the remains back to this couple. Losing a child is bad enough without losing the only lasting connection you have to them. SOURCE

“Their initial reaction was that she was probably the victim of some kind of assault,” said Deputy Chief Jerome Brannagan.

After talking to the woman, a very different picture emerged for the officers.
