Mom Welcomes Philippines First Set of Quintuplets

A 27 year-old Philippines mom has welcomed five babies via Caesarean section Sunday in Manila. Lorita Barrera and her husband Gary were only expecting quadruplets, based on her ultrasound results.

All five babies were placed in incubators, with at least three of them struggling with underdeveloped lungs. Two were reported to have pneumonia.

“There’s a chance that they will survive as long as there are no complications. They’re only 33 weeks old so their lungs aren’t fully developed,” one doctor said.

Dr. Jolynne de Leon told the Star two of the babies were in critical condition and the other three were unstable but improving.

She said it was the first recorded case of quintuplet birth in the country, with all the babies alive.

The babies had not yet been given names so doctors referred to them as babies A, B, C, D and E. Their weights ranged from 3.09 pounds down to 2.32 pounds.

Sadly, both parents are unemployed.

“We don’t know how we’re going to support them,” the mother said a day after giving birth at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

Welfare officials said the government would provide the family financial support, including medical assistance and milk for the infants.

Tucson Couple Welcomes Quintuplets

Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center welcomes their first set of quintuplets for 2009.

Lorena and Enrique Puig are the proud parents of three girls and two boys, born Wednesday within four minutes of each other.

“It was the most wonderful experience being there,” Lorena Puig said at news conference at the hospital on Friday. “I will always remember that experience with a smile on my face.”

The babies range in weight from 2 pounds, 1.7 ounces to 2 pounds, 8 ounces.

The quintuplets will likely remain hospitalized for another 10 weeks.

The babies, who were conceived by fertility treatments, arrived after being in utero for 29 weeks.
The couple has purchased a new home in Tucson that they will move in once all five babies are released.

Staten Island Couple Introduces Quints And Takes Two Home

The first two of the quintuplets born to Staten Island couple Jamie and Kevin Ferrante spent their first night at home last night.

The pair became the proud parents of four girls and one boy on December 27, but only Alessia and Emily came home Wednesday night.

“It’s amazing; it’s real and it’s here,” said dad, Kevin, who caught a little sleep in between feeding Alessia — who now weighs 4 pounds, 1 1/2 ounces — and Emily — who is 4 pounds, 3 and 1/2 ounces — every three hours or so.

“They’re a little smaller, they’re basically doing everything a regular baby does,” he said about his girls. “It’s a lot of sleeping for them.”

The first-ever experience yesterday of holding all five of the pint-sized newbies at the same time, came as a sweet shock.

“It was like ‘wow’ you really feel it,” he said. “I didn’t know what that would be like. It really hit home.”

Matthew Ferrante is expected to come home by the end of the week following hernia surgery. The littlest quintuplets, Amanda and Ella, still need to remain in the hospital to gain weight.

“They just have to gain a little weight; they’re all off the oxygen,” said proud but exhausted dad, before heading out for the hospital for feeding, a routine he and his wife have been keeping for weeks.

Tuesday night the neonatalogist told them to get lots of sleep because it will be the last time for a very very long time.

Mega Multiples On The Rise: Syria Welcomes 2 Sets Of Quints In 3 Days

A woman in the Syrian capital of Damascus has given birth to quintuplets, marking the second such birth in Syria during a three-day period, a doctor says.

Gynecologist Kana’an al-Saqa said Thursday that a 36-year-old woman, whose identity was not reported, gave birth to four girls and a boy at Damascus’ Maternity Hospital.

The babies arrived by Caesarean section after 34 weeks of pregnancy.

While quintuplet births used to only occur once for every 50 million people, the country saw a similar birth Tuesday when a woman from al-Raqa city gave birth to two boys and three girls.

If I had of covered this story last year, 2 sets of quints in one week would be unusual, but this year – for some reason – it doesn’t seem to unique…

It’s like celebrities who are having twins…

Peruvian Mom Welcomes Quintuplets

It’s official – 5 is the new 2. No one is having one baby anymore and a LOT of people are having mega multiples.

A Peruvian woman has welcomed a set of quintuplets – three boys and two girls – at Edgardo Rebagliati Martins Hospital in Lima, authorities announced. A press release from Essalud, the Peruvian social security organization that operates the hospital, said Friday that the woman underwent a successful Cesarean section “after expecting for a tense 31 weeks.”

The babies are the first quintuplets born at one of Peru’s public social security hospitals and have been named Leandro, Gabriel, Fernando, Melania and Berenice. According to the report, all are in good health, although they are being kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit for Newborns at Rebagliati Hospital.

Dr. Hector Malaverry, the hospital’s chief of obstetrics and gynecology, said that the new mom “had needed complete rest for more than five weeks so the babies could gain weight and develop their lungs better, which now increases their chances of survival despite the problems that come with being premature.”

Because all still need complete rest and observation by the medical team, the babies and their mom will be introduced to the world in the coming days.

Texas Couple Welcomes Quintuplets!

Casey and Ethan Jones have five new additions to their family.

The couple welcomed four girls and one boys today at Seton Medical Center by Cesarean section. The babies arrived weighing between 2 pounds, 2 ounces and 2 pounds, 13 ounces.

The exciting delivery was supported by about 30 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel.

Ethan Jones became choked up during a press conference this afternoon announcing the births. “It was an incredible experience from start to finish,” he said.

The babies will be in the hospital a couple of months, said Dr. Patrick Hodges, a neonatologist.

Casey and Ethan also have a 4-year-old daughter.

UPDATE: Staten Island Quints Doing Well

Health officials at Staten Island University Hospital say that all five babies born yesterday to Jamie and Kevin Ferrante are doing well.

The babies, who arrived at 27 weeks gestation, are recovering at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

At birth all 5 babies were placed on ventilators. Today, four still remain vented, while the smallest, 1 pound, 8-ounce Amanda Frances was able to breathe with less help. Chances are she is now on CPAP(an non-invasive method of keeping the lungs open while pushing air into them).

Contrary to reports yesterday, the new mom and her husband had been trying to have children for more than three years, and she HAD been receiving fertility treatments for about a year and a half.

The babies, in order of birth are:

Allesia Louise, 2lbs
Amanda Frances, 1lb 8oz
Emily Ann, 2lb 1 oz
Matthew Sabatino, 2lbs 4.5 ozs
Ella Lilliana, 1lb 15.5 ozs

Because they are so small, the parents have not yet been able to hold their five new additions, but have been able to touch them.

The quints are the first set to be born at Staten Island University Hospital.

Staten Island Couple Welcomes Quintuplets!

Jamie and Kevin Ferrante of Staten Island became first-time parents at 1:30 a.m.when Jamie gave birth to quintuplets in a matter of six minutes flat, according to Jamie’s father, Tony Scherillo.

“They had to all be taken care of. They had teams of doctors and nurses with each baby,” the 67-year-old grandfather said. “They must’ve had about 40 people in the operating room. It was amazing, and they were incredible. Absolutely incredible.”

The babies, in order of birth are:

Allesia Louise, 2lbs
Amanda Frances, 1lb 8oz
Emily Ann, 2lb 1 oz
Matthew Sabatino, 2lbs 4.5 ozs
Ella Lilliana, 1lb 15.5 ozs

The proud grampa said also said his daughter did not take fertility drugs and that the babies were delivered by C-section.

“Everybody was ecstatic. Nobody could believe it,” responded Scherillo when asked about the family’s initial reaction of learning his daughter would have five babies. “You’ve got to be kidding. I’ve got eight grandchildren … and in ten minutes I’ve got 13 grandchildren. It’s incredible.”

Congratulations to this couple! What a great way to celebrate the holidays.

More information is now available about the set of Quintuplets that were born at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

The babies, who arrived at 30 1/2 weeks, were born to Adwai Malual, a Native of Sudan.

The 4 girls and 1 boy arrived on Dec. 2 between 9:38 a.m. and 9:42 a.m by Cesarean section. All five babies, who are being fed through tubes, said to be doing well.

“They’re all what we call feeders and growers, warm in their incubators,” said Dr. Suzanne Rindfleisch. “They couldn’t be doing any better.”

The girls are:

Nyantweny, 2 pounds, 15 ounces
Nyandeng, 2 pounds, 13 ounces
Abyei, 2 pounds, 11 ounces
Athei, 2 pounds, 2 ounces

The little boy is named Deng, and he arrived weighed 2 pounds, 5 ounces.

The new mom, who came to the U.S. to visit her sister, sought medical attention and was ultimately referred to Dr. William Sweeney, the medical center’s maternal-fetal medicine specialist.

She has been released from the hospital and is currently staying with family while the babies grow.She will be able to take them home in two to four weeks, hospital officials said.

Couple Welcomes Quintuplets

Anne Arundel Medical Center is reporting the successful delivery of the first set of quintuplets in the hospital’s 106-year history.

The Medical center spokesman Justin Paquette could not say when the quintuplets were born and would not identify the hometown of the mother, other than to say she is “non-local” and that everyone is doing well.

According to a news release, a 37-member clinical team handled the delivery of the four girls and one boy.

A news conference is planned for tomorrow.

The hospital made the news this summer when their labor and delivery unit, delivered six sets of twins and one set of triplets in less than 48 hours.

Texas Family Expecting Quintuplets

Another Texas family is expecting another set of quints. Last month we introduced you to Bill and Kelly Phillips, who welcomed 2 boys and 3 girls(4 of which are already home).

KVUE is reporting that Casey and Ethan Jones are next in line for a bit of chaos in Texas.

The mom-to-be is 20 weeks pregnant with a ‘real’ due date of March 27th. Even though doctors know she won’t make it to 40 weeks, the couple is hoping for 28 weeks, which would make the babies New Years babies. The average gestation for quints is 27.4 weeks.

This is the second time the couple has used fertility treatment to get pregnant.

Their 4-year-old daughter, Eliot, will be big sister to the four girls and one boy.

“We were unbelievably blessed for it to work on the first time with Eliot – and then again …our doctor was in shock,” said Ethan and Casey.

Dr. Kaylen Silverberg is the Jones’ fertility doctor. He says the science of fertility treatment has improved greatly, but conceiving five babies is not desired because of the dangers involved and now rarely happens.

“I’ve been doing this for 19 years; this is the first time this has happened. I had one set of quadruplets 10 years ago maybe, so it’s extraordinarily rare because we do this all day everyday,” said Dr. Silverberg.

In order to prepare for the chaos that is ahead, the Jones’ are getting some multiple advice from the Wilkinsons.

Gaza Mom Welcomes Quintuplets: Gives Them Controversial Names

It was reported yesterday that a woman from the Gaza Strip who recently gave birth to quintuplets named her babies after Hamas leaders and suicide bombers.

The woman from the Al-Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip delivered three boys and two girls by caesarian section in a hospital in Gaza City.

The three boys were named after the leader of the Hamas movement, Khaled Meshaal, Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and the leader of the movement’s conservative wing, Mahmoud Zahar.

The baby girls were named after a mother of six sons, dubbed the Mother of Martyrs, Maryam Farhat, who sent three of her sons on suicide missions against Israel, and Fatima Najjar, 52, a mother of eight, who blew herself up near a group of Israeli soldiers.

I guess that Michael, Thomas, James, Sophia and Emily were taken…

Texas Couple Welcomes Quintuplets

It has been a big week for Mega Multiples! First Digna and Victor Carpio announced the arrival of their sextuplets, now the Phillips family welcomes quints.

Kelly Phillips gave birth to five babies at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas on Saturday, October 25.

John, Becca, Ali, David and Kate made their television debut on Thursday and doctors say they’re doing amazingly well.Three girls and two boys will join their 18-month-old brother at home as soon as they gain a bit more weight.

Kelly did such a great job growing these babies, they are all big enough at birth to breathe independently. Here are their weights as per the couple’s website:

John – 3 lbs 4 oz
Becca – 3 lbs 12 oz
Ali – 4 lbs 4 oz
David – 4 lbs
Kate – 4 lbs

Doctors were thrilled that Phillips was able to carry the babies for 33 weeks. The average gestation for quints is 27.4 weeks.

“I’m feeling pretty good and I feel blessed to have babies that are healthy and well,” Kelly Phillips said. “And we’re anxioius to bring them home.”

As you can imagine, the couple was a little stunned when they first learned they would have five more babies.

“We were in shock, but once we went through the first trimester and started picking names, we were ecstatic,” Phillips said.

The babies will hopefully be home in the next few weeks, but before that the couple will have to figure out how to squeeze a family of eight into a three-bedroom house. Then they can look forward to a few years of bottles, diapers, sleepless nights and endless joy.

Mrozek Quintuplets Celebrate 1st Birthday!

Today, the Mrozek quintuplets — Matthew, Jackson, Breah, Lainey and Nathan — will turn one.

Kare 11, a local news outlet, had the opportunity to speak with parents Jessie and Rory about their first year with 5 babies and a toddler.

“We’re extremely lucky. I didn’t think we’d see this day when we’d have all five big healthy, happy babies,” said Jessie Mrozek, the babies’ mother.

But getting five babies to their first birthday hasn’t been easy. It’s taken parents, a big sister — Kaylie, grandparents and so much more.

“Just looking back and we had to feed them every three hours, and we were only sleeping four hours a night each and rotating shifts. I don’t know how we did it. I don’t want to do it again,” says Jessie, laughing.

Even though the babies now mostly sleep through the night, caring for six children under four (Kaylie is 3 and a half) requires careful choreography.

At dinner time, two babies are fed at a time, with the rest waiting their turn. But through all the eating, playing, napping and crying — five babies are also becoming their own people.

Jackson is a “happy” baby.
Breah is “independent.”
Nathan is “Grandma’s boy.”
Matthew is “very affectionate.”
And Lainey — Lainey is the leader… and survivor.

“She was the one in the beginning who almost didn’t make it but pulled through,” said Rory Mrozek, the babies’ Dad, adding that Lainey turned out to be the “first to get a tooth, first to crawl, first to stand against furniture.”

The Mrozek family is celebrating the quints birthday with a private party on Saturday.

On Sunday, they’re inviting EVERYONE interested in celebrating with them to the St. Francis Xavier Church in Sartell. The church is hosting a birthday party for the children following the 10:30 mass.

Kenyan Mom Welcomes Quintuplets

A first-time mother welcomed a set of quintuplets today — eight weeks before the estimated due date.

The babies, who are seven-and-a-half-months-old, will have to stay in the incubator at Jamaa Hospital in Uhuru for at least a month.

The five babies, who arrived via caesarean section, weighed between 1.35kg and 600g.

They new mom, Ann Kariuki, 27, breathed a sigh of relief after delivering the five tots between 2.34am and 2.42am with a time interval of four to two minutes. She had been admitted at 1am in labour.

With tears streaming down her fatigued face, Ms Kariuki could not hide her joy and worries over how she was going to pay the huge medical bill or care for the babies.

“It was a real hassle. I could not sleep or walk, but I’m very happy. I appeal to well-wishers to help me,” she said. Doctors had feared the pregnancy was ectopic.
