Tiger Woods says he finds fatherhood more important than major golf titles, balancing his determination for greatness on the course with the joys of family life.

“The stability that I have in my life off the golf course has definitely made me a better person on the golf course,” Woods said.

This week’s Masters at Augusta National Golf Club marks the first major championship Tiger has played in following 8 months of recovery after knee surgery and the birth of his son Charlie Axel on February 8.

Tiger became a father in 2007 with the birth of daughter Sam Alexis, who turns two in June.

“Having kids is the most important thing in your life,” he said. “It puts a totally different perspective on your life, making sure you raise your kids as best as you possibly can.

“When you hit a bad shot and you come home and you have a bad round, it puts it in perspective when you have kids. It’s really not that bad. No matter how bad your day was on the course, it’s not that bad when you come home.”

“Charlie has touched a club but he can’t hold one yet. Sam didn’t grab a club until she was able to crawl. She’s still not swinging a club. She would rather throw the ball.”

It will be interesting to see how he does in Augusta this week.

Tiger and Elin Woods shared the first official photos of their newest addition – Charlie!

Just 10 days old, Charlie makes his debut along with his dad, mom and older sister Sam.

It’s too bad he slept through the whole thing!

Golf.com reports that Charlie Axel Woods arrived yesterday.

Tiger posted this statement on his personal site after the baby’s birth,

“Both Charlie and Elin are doing great and we want to thank everyone for their sincere best wishes and kind thoughts.”

Pictures of the baby have obviously not been released. Tiger and Elin

“look forward to introducing Charlie to you at the appropriate time.”

This is the second child for the couple, whose daughter, Sam Alexis, was born in June 2007.

“Elin is feeling great and we are both thrilled,” Woods said. “While my injury has been disappointing and frustrating, it has allowed me to spend a lot of time watching Sam grow. I can’t begin to tell you how rewarding it is being a dad and spending time with her and Elin.

“The injury has been a blessing and a disappointment.”

The couple, who have been married since 2004, has another child Sam Alexis, 1. Tiger was an only child, while Elin has a twin sister.

Woods said the statue symbolizes the support that led to so much success – 61 victories on the PGA Tour going into the 2008 season, along with 13 majors and the career Grand Slam twice over.

“It brings back my childhood, what he’s meant to me in my life, not only from a golf standpoint,” Woods said. “He was always there. That’s basically what it symbolizes. He always had my back. If I failed, I could always come home to love.”

On hand for the ceremony was Tiger’s 7month old daughter, Sam, his wife Elin and mother Kultida.

The golf legend spoke about his inspiration for the 35,000 square foot facility that was designed to help students prepare for their future:

“Ever since the day he passed, I have yet to go a day without thinking of my dad. Now that I’ve had Sam, it’s amazing how I keep reflecting on things he taught me. I can’t wait to pass that on. That’s one reason I worked so hard on my foundation to expand this. He was all about helping others.”

Sam was dressed in Tiger’s signature red for the final day, but couldn’t stay awake long enough to greet daddy with a smile.

This is the first time we have seen her since the first official photos were released not long after her birth.

Tiger Woods spoke yesterday about the birth of his first child, Elin’s complications and fatherhood in general.

He revealed that he played the whole tournament (U.S. Open) knowing that his wife, Elin, was in a Florida hospital with complications from her pregnancy. He also recalled that he was in continuous phone contact with Elin and that both she and her doctor insisted that he keep playing the major championship in Oakmont, Pa.

The message, the golfer said, was: “There is nothing you can do. So go out there and just get a ‘W.’”

Tiger did not end up winning The U.S. Open, finishing back just one stroke to Angel Carberra of Argentina.

After the tournament was over Tiger returned home in time to be present for the birth of his first child.

He describes that night as “infinitely more rewarding than any ‘W’ could have been”.

On choosing the name Sam for his daughter:

“My father had always called me Sam since the day I was born,” said the 12-time major champion whose given name is Eldrick and whose more popular nickname was taken from a soldier who was a friend of the elder Woods in Southeast Asia. “He rarely ever called me Tiger. I would ask him, ‘Why don’t you ever call me Tiger?’ He said, ‘Well, you look more like a Sam.’ I said, ‘All right, that’s cool.’ “

On being a first time daddy:

“It’s been fantastic these last couple weeks to have Sam Alexis as part of our life,” he said. “It was a dream come true for both Elin and myself. I’ve been changing diapers and doing feedings. I definitely don’t sleep now.”

On their love for their new baby:

“Elin and I talked that first night and said, ‘How can you love something so much that didn’t exist the day before?’ We never experienced anything like that.”

The Gift Phil and Amy Mickelson sent for Sam:

Woods and Mickelson are known for their rivalry on the course and a cool relationship off it, but they have been known to have fiercely friendly pingpong games during the Ryder Cup. The Mickelsons sent Sam a miniature pingpong table with the message, “We thought we should give Sam Alexis a chance to jump-start her own game.”

Just in case anyone is wondering…Sam has already had a club in her hand. “She couldn’t quite hold it, but it was there.”

Tiger Woods posted pictures of his new bundle this morning on his website. Little Sam is seen sleeping comfortably in daddy’s arms while Elin gives her some love.

Many people say that Tiger is a different person socially than what you see on T.V. during tournaments. You can see here that Sam has already softened him and captured his heart.

Congratulations to Tiger Woods and wife Elin on the safe arrival of their baby girl.

Tiger announced via his website that his wife Elin had delivered their baby on Monday.

Elin and I are delighted to announce the birth of our daughter, Sam Alexis Woods. Sam was born early Monday morning, June 18th. Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully. We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy.

The couple’s first child was born less than 24 hours after Tiger finished second in the U.S. Open, one shot behind Angel Cabrera, on Sunday, just narrowly missing Father’s Day.

This weekend the spotlight is on Tiger to see if he will win the Masters for the 5th time in his career, but next year his goals may be very different.

When asked if collecting major titles still be as important to him? Tiger responded,

“As important? I don’t know, but certainly it will be more difficult to try and prepare. Because obviously we’re going to have a little one, and it’s our responsibility to try and raise it as best we can, and that’s going to require a lot of energy. I’ve never gone through it before, so I don’t know how my preparation or my playing schedule will change.

“Obviously our whole priority [will be] to raise our child. That will be our No. 1 priority.”

At the end of December, Tiger and Elin announced they were expecting a baby this summer. I think when this child arrives we will see a different side of the normally serious golfer.

The two announced they were going to be parents at the end of December. Elin is due in the summer. She looks great and is definitely staying in shape by following Tiger’s game!

Tiger Woods announced on his website today that he and Elin are expecting their first child.

“As some of you know, today is my 31st birthday. I’ll spend it quietly with family and friends, but Elin and I have more exciting news to share: We are expecting our first child together this summer”.

“Obviously, we couldn’t be happier and our families are thrilled,” said Woods. “I have always wanted to be a dad. I just wish my father could be around to share the experience.”

Woods’s dad, Earl Woods, passed away in May at age 74 after battling cancer. The father and son had a famously close relationship. “My dad was my best friend and greatest role model,” Woods said at the time. “He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend.

“As for his career, Woods says he plans to “stick close to home” for the next few weeks to spend more time with his expectant wife. He plans to start his 2007 PGA Tour season at the Buick Invitational in late January.

We are happy for Tiger and Elin. They were married for just over two years in a lavish celebration on the Island of Barbados. It is time for him to have a protege to teach all of his golf tricks to.
