She is believed to be among the oldest Canadian women to give birth.

The twin boys arrived seven weeks premature by C-section at Calgary’s Foothills Hospital Tuesday morning. The new mom is recovering in intensive care, while the twins are in the neo-natal intensive care unit.

One of the babies is breathing with the help of special equipment, while the other boy is in the special care unit. Doctors say both are doing well. The twins will be kept in hospital until they can maintain their temperature, can breathe on their own without assistance and can feed by bottle or breast all feeds.

In the last few years there has been a growing trend of older women undergoing IVF in other countries. Last year 70-year-old Rajo Devi welcomed her first baby and 70-year-old Omkari Panwar welcomed twins.

I personally don’t agree with women who give birth so late in life because I think that it robs their children of precious time with their parents late in life.

I am, however, happy that these babies are doing well.

“I don’t want to be one of those guys who is like, ‘Look at my babies. The second you have kids, you can’t help but be like, ‘I happen to have some photos of my children.’ “

The actor also credited his wife for her breast feeding abilities.

In November, Rebecca told Page Six magazine she was ready to give birth because she was on bedrest.

“I can’t move anymore… I’m a beached whale!” she said. “I have not been without a bra this entire pregnancy. I refuse. I’m not taking any chances. I’m determined to keep the puppies up!”

She also revealed that the twins were conceived without the help of in vitro fertilization or the fertility drug Clomid.

“A year ago, we tried Clomid for a couple of months unsuccessfully,” Romijn said. “But by the second month, I was like, ‘Ahhh! I hate this!’ I think when you start messing with your own hormones, it’s crazy-making.”

Their mixed-race parents Dean Durrant and Alison Spooner repeated the two-tone miracle after a seven-year gap.

When the first set of twins arrived in 2001, the couple were astonished to see that Lauren took after her white mum, with blue eyes and red hair, while Hayleigh had black skin and hair like dad Dean.

Doctor Carol Cooper, author of a book on twins, said there was a two in a million chance of a second set of twins like the Durrant girls.

“To have a second set of non-identical twins is unusual. It means the mum is very fertile.”

Now they are regarded as a ‘one in a million’ family by experts because the first set of twins – Grace and Ruby – are non-identical while the latest arrivals – Isla Mae and Isobel – are identical.

All four girls were conceived naturally, without the need for any IVF treatment, and there is no history of twins in their families.

Debbie Ross, membership manager of the Twins and Multiple Birth Association, described the Pearson family’s two sets of twins as ‘practically unheard of.’

‘The chance of having non-identical twins is one in 67 while the chance of having identical twins is about one in 1,000′, she said.

‘But the chances of having two sets of twins, identical and non-identical, must be one in a million. You will find very few families who have a pair of identical twins and a pair of non-identical twins.’

Non-identical twins Grace (7lb 6oz) and Ruby (7lb 8oz) were born on December 9, 2005 – although the twist was that the girls look identical.

Identical twins Isla Mae (7lb 6oz) and Isobel (8lb 6oz) were born on August 26 this year.

Both sets of twins arrived at 38 weeks pregnancy, arriving by caesarean section three minutes apart.

The amazing nature of this family’s situation has caused them to ‘minor celebrities’ where they live in Colchester, Essex.

Adel says:

‘I can barely go out now, me and the girls are like celebrities. I can’t go shopping without somebody stopping me and wanting a look at the girls.

‘I try to dress them differently but everyone sees through it. People are just fascinated and have so many questions to ask.’

Female babies are often abandoned in India for being the wrong sex.

The California Department of Public Health, which determined the penalty, cited the prominent Los Angeles hospital in January after an investigation found “multiple failures by the facility to adhere to established policies and procedures for safe medication use.”
