Babycenter has named their top 100 boys and girls names from 2008.

The list was compiled from hundreds of thousands of parents who shared their baby’s name with the popular site.

The top 3 names in both categories remain virtually the same as last year’s list.

Dad Secretly Names Baby ‘Sarah McCain Palin’

A new father has secretly named his baby girl Sarah McCain Palin after the Republican ticket for president and vice president.

Mark Ciptak of Elizabethton put that name on the documents for the girl’s birth certificate, ignoring the name Ava Grace, which he and his wife had picked earlier.

The new dad told the Kingsport Times-News,

“I don’t think she believes me yet. It’s going to take some more convincing.”

Mark, a blood bank employee for the American Red Cross, said he named his third child after John McCain and Sarah Palin to “to get the word out” about the campaign.

“I took one for the cause,” he said. “I can’t give a lot of financial support for the (McCain/Palin) campaign. I do have a sign up in my yard, but I can do very little.”

Dad-To-Be Trades Right to Name His Baby for $100 Gas Card

Well you know that things are tough at the pump when a dad-to-be trades the naming rights to his unborn son for a $100 gas card.

David Partin recently heard that a local radio station was giving $100 worth of free gas to the listener who called in with the most interesting item to trade. Central Florida radio hosts Richard Dixon and J. Willoughby were quick to take Partin up on his offer.

When the baby is born this winter, he will be named Dixon and Willoughby Partin — with the “and” included.

Partin’s girlfriend, Samantha, says at least her son will have an interesting story about how he got his name.

Dixon and Willoughby plan to be at the hospital when the baby is born and will hand over the gas card when they see the official birth certificate.

$100?? Really?? What is this dad thinking? His poor son now has to go through life with this ridiculous name because his dad got $100!!!

Couple Wins Right To Name Son Lego

A Swedish couple has won the right to name their baby son Lego after a legal battle.

Couples in Sweden have previously run into trouble with officials over the names Ikea, Veranda, Metallica and the use of Elvis for a girl.

The Swedish Administrative Court of Appeals has now overruled an earlier decision to stop a couple naming their child after the brightly coloured plastic building blocks.

In Swedish law, offensive, unsuitable or inappropriate names are all forbidden, as well as names that could embarrass the people they are given to.

Lego’s was just the latest in a series of cases in which the tax authority or County Administrative Court have questioned unusual names for youngsters.

I just don’t understand why a parent feels the need to go SO outside of the box when naming their baby.

They obviously forget how cruel kids are on the playground…

Emily and Jacob Still Top Picks For New Parents

For the 12th straight year Emily is the number one name in the U.S. Jacob has been the top pick for boys for the nine years now.

New parents didn’t stray far from past habits in 2007 when naming their babies. Only one name—Elizabeth—is new to the top-10 list, returning after a two-year absence. Samantha, which previously ranked 10th, dropped to No. 12, according to the latest list released Saturday by the Social Security Administration.

Biblical names continued to dominate the boys’ list. Besides Jacob, other top picks for boys were Michael, Joshua and Matthew.

For girls, Isabella, Emma and Ava came after Emily, which has been the most popular female name since 1996.

Rounding out the top 10 for girls, in order, were Madison, Sophia, Olivia, Abigail, Hannah and Elizabeth.

The list for boys also includes Ethan, Daniel, Christopher, Anthony, William and Andrew.

Name experts have said the staying power of the top names may have something to do with appealing to multiple ethnic or religious groups and having no widespread negative connotations. Emily also has literary associations, including Emily Dickinson, evoking images of a woman who is both beautiful and smart, professors say.

For male twins, parents were most likely to combine Jacob with Joshua, Matthew with Michael and Daniel with David. The most popular combination for female twins was Ella and Emma.

Looking for a spiritual name? Nevaeh, or “heaven” spelled backwards is 31, Destiny No. 41, Trinity No. 72, Serenity No. 126, Harmony No. 315 and Miracle No. 461.

Boys were less likely to be named after spiritual concepts, even though the 2007 list includes Sincere (No. 622) and Messiah (No. 723).
