Just 6 weeks after his arrival, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden along with their 21-month-old daughter Harlow are showing off the newest addition to their family in People Magazine.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Richie told the magazine. “The only thing you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy, and they are. I’m right where I belong.”

In an interview at their home LA, the new parents say they are deprived of sleep, but grateful their daughter Harlow is now fawning over a baby brother.

“I’m glad I had a girl before I had a boy,” says Richie. “She just loves him so much.” Adds the children’s proud papa, “She’s very gentle with him.”

Congratulations to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden on the safe arrival of their second child – a boy!

Nicole posted the good news on her website this morning saying:

In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009 Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden.

He weighs 7lbs 14oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes.

Joel Madden was spotted out yesterday at the Farmers Market in LA with daughter Harlow.

The rocker daddy was recently overheard saying,

“I love to spoil [daughter] Harlow.” The eavesdropper told page six, “Joel said she’s a daddy’s girl and was talking about how exciting it is for Nicole to have [their second] baby in a few weeks.”

Nicole Richie and boyfriend Joel Madden are expecting another child, just a year after welcoming daughter Harlow Winter Kate Madden.

In a message titled “Better than winning an OSCAR!” the daddy-to-be wrote,

“I am so happy to tell everyone that Harlow is going to be a big sister! God has truly blessed my family. Hope [you're] all feeling as good as i am right now.”

Earlier this month, Nicole gushed:

“Everything I do is for her.”

“I was so excited from the minute I found out I was pregnant … and it’s been nothing but an amazing ride since.”

“Joel actually changes more diapers than I do. It’s his time with her. He sings to her. He laughs with her, plays with her. It’s amazing.”

“I feel like my group of five to 10 friends, they really love her, like she’s theirs … My friends never go outside for smoke breaks anymore, they don’t curse, they are definitely more demure. It’s actually been really interesting.”

The new mom reveals that she wants to have a whole team of children saying,

“I want five children, twin boys and three girls. I’ve wanted that since I was a little girl.”

On the night of the Grammys in February, just a few weeks after Harlow’s birth, the couple headed out and got a rough time from the press. Nicole said with a furrowed brow,

“I was gone for maybe three hours. I never go out. I go four or five days without leaving my house. But the press just went wild with it.”

Having Harlow has changed Nicole’s life.

She told Diane Sawyer in an interview last year that “I owe the baby my life,” and she seems full of new-mommy mojo. Gossip sites like Perez Hilton, which used to gleefully post her too-skinny bikini pictures and mug shot, now gush, “Nicole looks so pretty. Love her hair!”

Joel recently showed his softer side when talking about touring in Europe earlier this month.

He said, “(I cried) before I left for tour, when I was just looking at my daughter and it made me cry a little bit. It was when I was rocking her in her crib.”
