Couple Name Baby ‘Superman’

In June, we shared the story of a family’s battle to name their baby 4real.

When Pat and Sheena Wheaton attempted to register their son’s name, officials rejected it because it included a number.

Rather than settling for a common name like John or James, the couple from New Zealand chose the alternative name of ‘Superman’.

However, they are not satisfied with the initial rejection and are considering legal action against the government’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in order to have their choice approved.

Although the official name on the birth certificate is Superman, the Wheatons still refer to their child as 4real.

The parents were inspired to choose this name after seeing their baby for the first time during an ultrasound scan and realizing the profound impact of becoming parents.

They believed that 4Real was the most fitting representation of their feelings, but it was not accepted by the registrar due to the rule prohibiting numbers in names, which is common in many countries, including the UK.

The couple were informed that naming their child “For Real” would be acceptable, but they dismissed the idea, believing that it lacked the same impact.

Mrs. Wheaton explained that most people have to search the meaning of their names in baby name books, with no direct connection between the name and its significance. However, with the name 4real, its meaning is easily understood by everyone.

The news of their unique struggle generated a flurry of online comments, many of which mocked and criticized the couple.

Despite this, Mr. Wheaton remains determined, stating that they will stick with the name 4Real. He acknowledged that negative comments can be distressing, but he refuses to let them deter his choice.

In the end, he believes that it is pointless to let the comments of others, even potentially from a ten-year-old, upset them.
