Family With Baby Rescued After Getting Stranded Overnight On Lake

Island Lake Manitoba A couple and their eighteen-month-old child are thankful to be safe after they were stranded overnight along a Manitoba lake located 500 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.

The family’s boat ran out of gas while they were traveling from their St. Theresa Point home to Garden Hill along Island Lake.

Local residents and individuals from the Manitoba Search and Rescue Association began searching for the couple when they didn’t return. The search extended into the night and finally came to an end the next morning when a police helicopter spotted them on the shore of Island Lake.

George Leonard, spokesman for the Manitoba Search and Rescue Association reported that overnight the temperature dropped to – 11 degrees Celsius.

“When you hear the 18-month-old baby, your heart’s going to stop for a beat because the main thing you’re worried about is we got to solve this problem immediately, he told CBCNews.

Hoping to be seen, the family stayed in the boat and waited for searchers to find them.

After being rescued Wednesday morning, all three were taken to a local nursing station where it was determined that they were in good health.

“They were very cold, very tired and very happy that someone found them – just glad to get out of the water”.

Representatives from the Manitoba Search and Rescue Association are petitioning to get a system of all-season roads built within the area, preventing people from having to travel by water within the Island Lake area. – Jeff Staff Writer
