NC Couple Welcomes Twins ~ 1 in 2010, 1 in 2011!

New Years Eve was an exciting night for Christy and Marlin Alston when they prematurely welcomed their twins at Duke Hospital within two minutes of each other – but in two different years.

Weighing just 3 pounds 7 ounces, Ashton Parker Alston, arrived at 11:58 p.m. Friday, on the last day of 2010, while his sister, Alisha Rae Alston arrived at the stroke of midnight Saturday morning and weighed 3 pounds 10 ounces.

According to the new dad the babies are tiny, but doing well.

Christy works for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Marlin was laid off from his job as a machinist last March. This has allowed him the opportunity to accompany his wife for all her medical appointments and to support her during her pregnancy.

“I’ve been here all the way, and I’ve learned a lot of stuff. I just didn’t know the experience of pregnancy and the things women have to go through. You just think a woman gets pregnant and she has a baby, but there’s a lot of things going on. I feel sorry for women who have to go through this alone.”

The family is pretty excited that Ashton will qualify his parents for a $1,000 child tax credit when they file their 2010 income tax return.

“I haven’t even thought about the tax deduction, but my wife has,” Marlin said.

“She was kind of out of it – but when she heard somebody talking about that, she hollered out and said, ‘Yeah, that’s right, I can file on one of them, the boy.'”

Congratulations to them! Their twins unique arrival will undoubtedly be a story that is told in their family for years to come.
