It was a big surprise for a mother(and likely hospital staff) on Friday night when she gave birth to her baby girl at Whittier Hospital Medical Center weighing 13 pounds and 10 ounces. The infant is believed to be the largest baby ever born in the medical center.
Mom Yvette Hernandez of Bell Gardens gave birth to baby Kaelyn Hernandez making her Memorial Day weekend even more memorable.
The baby girl will be soon joining her elder brother and sister at home and is expected to go home today.
“Mom and baby are resting comfortably in the hospital’s (obstetrics) unit,” Whittier Hospital Medical Center officials said.
And despite her unusual size, she was born a week early.
Her mom added that the baby was a quiet girl and she herself felt calm after the delivery.
Hospital spokesman Jay Geer said, her weight at birth was “about double what a normal baby is.”
Yvette’s first child weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces at birth, and her second weighed 10 pounds 10 ounces but it was still a surprise for her to give birth to such a big baby.
