Police Chief Delivers His Own Daughter At Roadside

It’s common nowadays for dads to be present in the delivery room, but this dad went above and beyond the call of duty with the birth of his daughter. Eagle Police Chief Joey Staufer delivered his own baby girl on the side of a Colorado highway with the help of a 911 operator.

Early Tuesday morning, Staufer and his wife realized their daughter would be arriving soon. They arranged to meet emergency crews at the Gypsum Fire Station, but they only made it to the Gypsum off-ramp on Interstate 70 before their little one changed everyone’s plans.

In a 911 call, the baby’s very first cries can be heard as Staufer proclaims, “We have a baby.”

The family was then transported to a nearby hospital and everyone is doing well.

Kelly Klein, the 911 operator who assisted Staufer with the delivery, will be receiving a pink stork pin and will have his name inscribed on a plaque at the Town of Vail’s communication center. Over-the-phone child deliveries do not happen often, and Klein feels lucky to be a part of the birth.

“This is why I got into emergency services, for experiences like this,” said Klein.
