Study Finds That Organic Fruit Has More Vitamin C

Yesterday I did a post on the growing popularity of Organics for infants. A Neonatologist was quoted as saying that there was “no evidence that organic baby food is better or safer”. Not 10 hours later I found this study.

Further evidence in support of the health benefits of organic fruit and vegetables has been published by an international team of researchers.

They found that organic carrots, apples and peaches contained higher levels of vitamin C and flavonoids, compounds with antioxidant properties said by some scientists to protect against heart attacks and cancer.

Last week, U.S. researchers revealed that organic kiwi fruit has significantly more vitamin C and polyphenols — linked to reduced cholesterol, improved circulation, and lower cancer risks — than non-organic produce.

In January, David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, said the use or otherwise of pesticides made no nutritional difference.

Dr. Kirsten Brandt of Newcastle University, who led the EU-funded study, said: “If you eat 400 g (14oz) of fruit and vegetables a day you would get 20 percent more nutrients in organic food.”
