Yesterday I did a post on the growing popularity of Organics for infants. A Neonatologist was quoted as saying that there was “no evidence that organic baby food is better or safer”. Not 10 hours later I found this study.
They found that organic carrots, apples and peaches contained higher levels of vitamin C and flavonoids, compounds with antioxidant properties said by some scientists to protect against heart attacks and cancer.
Last week, U.S. researchers revealed that organic kiwi fruit have significantly more vitamin C and polyphenols — linked to reduced cholesterol, improved circulation and lower cancer risks — than non-organic produce.
In January, David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, said the use or otherwise of pesticides made no nutritional difference.
Dr. Kirsten Brandt of Newcastle University, who led the EU-funded study, said: “If you eat 400 g (14oz) of fruit and vegetables a day you would get 20 per cent more nutrients in organic food.”
