Preemie Profile: Cale Lee
My son Cale was born in August 2005 at 27 weeks gestation weighing 1 lb 4 oz. At that point he should have been well over 2 lbs, but doctors estimated he stopped growing around 23 weeks. He was born emergency cesarean section in Windsor and remained here for one week.
By the 7th day the doctors told us he needed to be transferred to a level 3 facility with more resources.
When the Mc Master Transfer team arrived they told us his chance of survival was 1%. He required 100% oxygen and if he needed more during the trip they wouldn’t have anymore to give him. He was then transferred via ambulance to Hamilton were they put him on the oscillator.
He was oscillated for 3 weeks, intubated for 2 months, nasal cpap for 4-5 weeks then on conventional oxygen for 3 weeks. After staying in Hamilton for 12 weeks he was transferred back to Windsor where he stayed in NICU for 3 more weeks.
He was born on August 20, was originally due Nov.15 and came home Dec. 7 2005. We were very lucky that his lungs were his only major issue, once we got over that we just had to concentrate on getting him bigger. He is now 14 1/2 months ( 11 1/2 corrected ) and doing exceptionally well!!!
Please do what you can to support an organization that is leading the campaign to reduce premature birth by supporting research and by educating the public and health care providers.
