After the Mattel recall on Tuesday there was some buzz about a bib recall from Toys R Us. I didn’t post it because CPSC had not yet issued an official recall.
I am not sure that they will, but Toys R Us is pulling the bibs in question probably due to excessive negative press.
Earlier this week the Center for Environmental Health in California reported it tested vinyl bibs purchased from Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores and found lead levels three to four times the legal limit for lead in paint. The bibs included one with Disney’s Winnie the Pooh characters and bibs from “Koala Baby” and “Especially for Baby.”
“We appreciate Toys R Us taking this strong action to protect children. Vinyl is a poison plastic that has no place around a baby’s neck,” said Charlie Pizarro, CEH’S associate Director. “We hope the company disposes of the toxic bibs safely.”
The New York Times hired a laboratory to test the bibs and found a similar level of contamination to that found in tests conducted for CEH.
This is the second bib recall this year. Walmart recalled 60,000 bibs because some of these bibs may contain lead in excess of Illinois limits.
I can honestly say that a bib is the last place I would expect to find lead. This issue is starting to REALLY frustrate me!!
