Brazilian Mom Gives Birth to Sextuplets in Just 10 Minutes

Quezia Romualdo’s life changed forever when she gave birth to six beautiful babies, all within the span of 10 minutes.  The first baby was so tiny that it could fit in the palm of a doctor’s hand.

Quezia and her husband, Magdiel Costa, were overjoyed at the news of their surprising pregnancy. Already parents to five-year-old Eloa, they had to make major renovations to their home in Colatina, Brazil, to make room for their expanding family.

After undergoing a uterine cerclage to safely keep her cervix closed until the end of the pregnancy, Quezia delivered the babies by C-section at 27 weeks. A team of 32 medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and pediatricians, were present during the birth, which happened at a hospital in Colatina.

Remarkably, just minutes after the procedure began, all six babies were safely delivered and found to be healthy.  Because all of the babies experienced some difficulty with breathing, they were intubated.

The sextuplets, named Theo, Matteu, Lucca, Henry, Eloa, and Mayte, are now thriving and bringing immense joy to their proud parents.

The odds of sextuplets being born naturally are incredibly low, estimated at just one in 4.7 billion! However, with the help of fertility treatments, the frequency of sextuplets has increased, with approximately 10 sets of sextuplets born worldwide every year.  The average gestation period for sextuplets is typically between 26 and 28 weeks.  Their birth brings a unique set of challenges to both parents and healthcare providers, including an increased risk of premature birth and various medical complications.  With advances in modern medicine and neonatal care, the survival rate of sextuplets has greatly improved over the years.
