Performance Artist Plans to Deliver Baby On Stage

Marni Kotak at the Microscope art gallery in Bushwick, New York No, it’s not an act – Marni Kotak, 36, plans to deliver her first child on stage! Kotak has already re-enacted other parts of her real life, including her own birth and the loss of her virginity. For Kotak, “real life is the best performance of art.”

The mom-to-be says she is setting up a birthing room equipped with a bed, an inflatable birthing pool, a shower and a rocking chair where she will spend the next five weeks with the father of her child, Jason Robert Bell, until “Baby X” is born. With the baby’s due-date uncertain, the gallery is putting together a list of visitors to notify when she goes into labor.

“I have decided to do this because I want to show people that, as in my previous performances, real life is the best performance of art. I hope that people will see that human life is the most profound work of art, and that therefore, giving birth, the greatest expression of life is the highest form of art,” Kotak told reporters.

While she is reportedly nervous about the delivery, her apprehensions have nothing to do with the performance.

“I wouldn’t say that I am scared to do this because I have a good support team: my midwife, doula and wonderful husband. Of course, I am a bit nervous about the whole process of giving birth and having a child, and like every mother, I am hoping that everything goes smoothly. But I am no more worried than I would be if I were having the baby at home or in a hospital,” Kotak said.

The gender of “Baby X” is unknown and Kotak plans to present raising her child as her next work of art.

What does the gallery have to say about a real, live delivery in their art studio? They say that Kotak continues to present ‘her life experiences as works of art, works in which she strives to avoid the spectacle often involved in performance art to reach what is real.’
