If your child received a My First Snowman toy recently, it’s time to check the hat — literally. The Step2 Company has issued a voluntary recall of this popular holiday toy due to a serious safety risk.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the toy’s black-and-red battery-powered top hat can break into small pieces, creating a choking hazard for young children. Although no injuries have been reported, Step2 has received 47 reports of the hat’s brim breaking. Out of caution, the company is urging families to stop using the toy immediately and remove the hat from the snowman.
The recall affects about 30,800 units sold in the U.S. and another 692 in Canada. It applies specifically to My First Snowman toys manufactured in December 2023 and April 2024. You can check the date code on the bottom of the toy’s hat, near the battery compartment.
These snowmen are hard to miss — standing about 17 inches tall, the toy features a white body with purple mittens, blue and green eyes, an orange nose, and colorful buttons. The top hat is a key feature, but it’s also the reason for the recall.
What Should Parents Do?
If you have one at home, here’s what Step2 advises:
- Immediately stop using the toy
- Remove the hat and keep it out of children’s reach
- Contact Step2 for instructions on safely disposing of the top hat and getting a free replacement
You can reach Step2 toll-free at 800-347-8372 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET), by email at step2-company@step2.net, or visit their recall page at step2.com/pages/step2-my-first-snowman.
The recalled snowman toys were sold online between March and December 2024 for about $40 at:
- Step2.com
- Amazon.com
- Walmart.com
- Wayfair.com
Even when toys seem harmless, small parts can pose serious dangers for little ones — especially those under three. Step2 is offering a replacement and notifying purchasers directly. If your child received this snowman as a holiday gift or birthday present, take a moment to inspect it and remove the hat to be safe.
