In a remarkable birth, Molly and Micky McLaren, twins from Scotland, were born simultaneously at 11:53 on April 27. The twins, considered “simultaneous twins,” surprised everyone in the delivery room when Molly emerged feet first while Micky came out head first. Molly weighed 5 pounds, 4 ounces, while Micky weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces.
The twins, now 12 weeks old, are doing well. Their mother, Diane McLaren, who already has five children, described the delivery as intense but exciting. She recalls the doctors informing her that she had given birth to both babies at once, as Molly had managed to turn herself breach and her foot emerged at the same time as Micky’s head.
The McLaren twins’ birth is a rare occurrence. Known as monoamniotic twins, they share a single placenta and amniotic sac, making up only 1% of identical twins and less than 0.1% of all pregnancies.
The unique birth attracted attention at the hospital, with doctors and nurses from all departments wanting to meet the famous twins. Even the registry office was surprised, requiring confirmation from the hospital before listing the twins as born at the same time on their birth certificates.
Diane and Daniel McLaren, who had previously experienced a loss in 2021, are overjoyed with their twins. Despite challenging labor, the pregnancy itself was relatively smooth. The couple already have three other children, Georgia, Adam, and Rory.
The story of the McLaren twins’ simultaneous birth is a testament to the incredible and rare moments that can occur in childbirth.
I am the mother in this story – the twins arent monoamniotic they were fraternal twins. Both had their own sacs and placentas. Just a rare birth =)
