Scotland’s Baby Box – A Strong Start for Every Newborn

Preparing for a baby can be overwhelming, but the Scottish Government has done a great job of creating a package for new parents.  They have pledged that every baby born in Scotland will receive their very own Baby Box.

This special box contains essential items that new parents will need in the first 6 months of their baby’s life. It’s designed to be a safe and comfortable place for your baby to sleep, with a small mattress included. Once the products have been removed, the box can be repurposed as a baby bed.

Inside the Baby Box, they have included everything parents need, including a mattress, fitted sheet, and blanket that fits perfectly. There’s a selection of clothes from newborn up to 6 months, a bath towel, a travel changing mat, muslin cloth squares, a cloth diaper, a toothbrush, and a bib. You’ll even receive books to start sharing stories with your baby before they’re born.

Safety is a top priority, which is why the Baby Box also includes a digital underarm thermometer and full safety instructions. For new moms, there are nursing towels, maternity pads, and even a pack of condoms.

The Scottish Government even suggests using the Royal Scottish National Orchestra app. It’s filled with music specifically designed for new parents and their babies to enjoy together with gentle music for waking up, lively songs for singing and clapping along, or calming tunes for dozing off.

Every newborn baby born and living in Scotland is eligible to receive a Baby Box. Midwives fill in a registration card when moms-to-be are around 20 to 24 weeks pregnant so the Baby Box can arrive 4 weeks before the due date.

Inspired by Finland’s successful initiative, the Scottish Government has created this box to set all parents up for success from the beginning. Since 1938, expectant mothers in Finland have received free boxes filled with baby items. The 2023 box includes 38 baby products, such as clothes, bedding, and hygiene products for postpartum moms, as well as baby care essentials like a bib, nail clippers, and a hairbrush.

More countries need to support their new parents like this.  Having a package like this would take the stress off preparing before the baby comes.
