22 Week Baby Beats the Odds and Thrives After 15 Months in the Hospital

In a story of resilience and strength, a baby girl born at just 22 weeks and six days, weighing only 1lb and 1.6oz, has defied all odds and is now flourishing at home. Maysa Hussain’s journey has been filled with countless hurdles, including cardiac arrests, influenza, and a major operation, but she has overcome them all.

Miracle Baby Beats the Odds and Thrives After 15 Months in the Hospital

Her determined mother, Kamilah Parvez, recalls when doctors warned her that Maysa had just a 7% chance of survival. They even questioned whether Kamilah wanted to proceed with the pregnancy. Despite the grim prognosis, Maysa fought with unwavering strength and resilience.

Reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster, Kamilah shares, “We took it a day at a time. We never allowed ourselves to look too far into the future or lose hope.” And that hope paid off. Maysa spent months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and later in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), facing additional challenges and setbacks. Yet, she continued to make progress.

One of the most daunting moments came when Maysa had to have 10cm of her bowel removed due to influenza when she was just eight months old and suffered three cardiac arrests. Her fragile condition required emergency surgery, and her family was told to prepare for the worst. But once again, she proved her strength and pulled through.

After a long journey, Maysa was finally able to go home on September 12, 2022. Her parents couldn’t be more overjoyed. Although Maysa faces some developmental delays due to her premature birth, her zest for life and vibrant personality shine bright. Kamilah proudly describes her daughter as a “little diva” who brings happiness to everyone around her.

“Since she has been home she has been thriving. She is a little diva, honestly, everyone loves her she makes people smile. We are still behind on development as she was premature, she isn’t able to talk and is nonverbal, but she has the biggest personality – we are so proud.”

Her story serves as a reminder that miracles do happen. Maysa’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, love, and the unwavering spirit of a fighter.
