Joe’s Crab Shack Served Alcohol to Six Children between Ages 2 and 8 after Bottle was ‘Mislabeled’

When you go to a restaurant and order something off the kid’s menu for your child, you assume that the items are safe to give your children. In most cases, they are, but a recent mishap in which six children, all between the ages of 2 and 8, were given alcoholic beverages in lieu of their child drinks will likely have parents everywhere examining their child’s beverage choice with a little more scrutiny.

According to Medical Daily, a family decided to spend a family visit into a nice night out at Joe’s Crab Shack in Colorado Springs.

The children were ordered the popular child’s drink of the kid’s menu, Shark Nibbles. Instead, they were served Shark Bites—an alcoholic cocktail containing Bacardi Limon Rum, Skyy Vodka, blue curacao, sweet and sour, and “a dangerous dose of grenadine.”

Then, about half an hour later, the waitress returned to the table to remove the drinks. She explained that “they were made with the wrong ingredients.”

It wasn’t until the manager came over to the table with a fresh tray of drinks that the family learned that the six children had all been given alcoholic beverages. And, unfortunately, some of the children—including the two-year-old, had already finished the rum and vodka laden drinks before they’d been removed by the waitress.

“[The manager] said it was ‘mislabeled’ and we were a little bit concerned with that kind of response,” Omar told KKTV. “You order these drinks and you order them off the kids menu with the intent that you’re providing your child with something safe and that the restaurant is doing their job.”

Some of the children started feeling sick and the family was forced to call the paramedics to ensure their safety. After being checked by Colorado Springs paramedics, the children were dubbed to be fine and were then released to go home, but the family is still, understandably, shaken by the entire incident.

The Colorado Springs police liquor team is conducting an investigation into the mishap, and a Joe’s Crab Shack spokesperson says that they are also doing an investigation into the matter.

“Joe’s Crab Shack is aware of this incident at the Colorado Springs location, and we are investigating this matter internally,” the company said in a statement to KKTV. “We do not condone underage service of any kind. Our guests can rest assured that our processes are continuously examined so that incidents like this are avoided.”
