Doctors in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj successfully performed a rare surgery to remove a 2-kilogram fetus from the stomach of a seven-month-old boy. The procedure, which lasted four hours, was carried out at Sarojini Naidu Children’s Hospital and is believed to be the first of its kind in the city.

Led by Dr. D Kumar, the team of doctors confirmed that the child is now in stable condition. The child’s father, a farmer from the Kunda area of Pratapgarh district, brought the child to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital’s OPD on July 24 due to the child’s severe abdominal pain and bloated stomach.

“The child’s mother had died after giving birth to the kid. The child’s stomach was very bloated, and the child was complaining of acute pain. A CT scan was done after a preliminary check-up and it showed that the child was carrying a fetus,” explained Dr. Kumar. He further clarified that this condition, known as fetus in fetu (FIF), is a rare congenital anomaly where a malformed and parasitic fetus develops inside the body of its twin.
